GASTON, SC : 1 dead after wrong-way crash near Gaston on Tuesday, 14th May 2024

A Summerville man is dead following a wrong-way crash in Lexington County Tuesday afternoon.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) said the crash occurred on U.S. 321 at Wilbur Road, around three miles north of Gaston, at around 2 p.m.

A 2005 Mazda SUV was traveling north on U.S. 321 before colliding head-on with a 2016 Dodge truck driving south in the northbound lane. SCHP said no other people were in the vehicles besides the two drivers.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the SUV’s driver as Whiteford Cornell McWaters, 53. He was taken to Lexington Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
