A woman is dead following a crash in Elk Rapids.

A Rapid City woman, riding in the passenger seat of a car, was pronounced dead following a head-on crash along U.S. 31 near South Bay Shore Drive just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening, said Antrim County Sheriff Dan Bean.

The road was closed into the late evening as investigators gathered evidence.

Bean said a northbound car, driven by a 27-year-old Central Lake man, crashed into the southbound vehicle in which the Rapid City woman was a passenger. Both drivers were uninjured in the crash but the Central Lake man was taken to jail pending a warrant, he said.

“The driver was taken to the hospital but he’s being lodged at our facility at this point in time,” Bean said, noting he soon plans to discuss potential criminal charges with Antrim County prosecutors. Those were not filed by late Tuesday evening.
