Shawnee, KS : Man killed in crash after car strikes bridge pillar in Johnson County early Sunday, April 10, 2016

One person was killed early Sunday in a single-vehicle crash in Johnson County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 4:50 a.m. on southbound Interstate 435 at Johnson Drive in Shawnee.

According to the patrol, a 2015 BMW X5 was traveling south on I-435 in the left lane when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a bridge pillar.

The driver of the BMW, James R. Belfield, 54, of Lake Quivira, was taken to an area hospital, where he died a short time later. The patrol said he wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

Belfield was alone in his car, according to the patrol.
