PEABODY, MA : Peabody woman killed in head-on crash on Route 1 on Saturday, 31st August 2019

Police said a Peabody woman was killed early Saturday morning when a man driving the wrong way on Route 1 in Saugus hit the car she was riding in head-on.

Evelyn Pinto, 48, was one of two people killed in the crash, state police said Monday. The other victim was Luis Gallego, 29, of Lynn, the driver of the car going the wrong way.

Pinto was the passenger in a 2018 Dodge Journey SUV, which police said was traveling north on Route 1 near the Army Barracks store in Saugus at the time of the crash. Police said the driver of the Journey, a 51-year-old Peabody man, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers from the State Police Danvers barracks responded to the crash around 3:35 a.m. Saturday. Minutes before, police had received reports of a wrong-way driver going south on Route 1 north near Sonic in Peabody.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Chevrolet Impala traveling the wrong way first clipped the rear end of a box truck, then crashed head-on into the Journey, police said.

Troopers found the driver of the Impala, Gallego, dead at the scene.
