Mount Airy, MD :Juvenile killed in head-on crash on Monday, July 13th 2015
A Juvenile was killed and two others were injured Monday morning in a head-on collision on Md. 27 near Mount Airy.Nicole Renee Collins, 29, of Taneytown, was driving south on Md. 27 shortly before 10 a.m. when she crossed the double-yellow center line in an attempt to pass a vehicle in front of her and collided with a northbound dump truck near the intersection of Michael Road, according to a news release from the Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack.Collins' juvenile passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and Collins was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with unspecified injuries, according to the release. She was in critical condition as of 4:30 p.m.A spokesman for the police said he could not release the name or age of the juvenile passenger and the investigation was ongoing. Preliminary investigation shows that both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.The dump truck driver, Vicente Lemus Hernandez, 36, of Frederick, was transported to Carroll Hospital for precautionary reasons with minor injuries, according to the release.Md. 27 was closed for around three hours while an on-scene investigation was completed, according to the release.The Maryland State Police CRASH Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division assisted in the investigation, according to the release.Personnel from the Winfield, Mount Airy and New Windsor volunteer fire companies as well as Lisbon Volunteer Fire Co. in Howard County responded to the scene of the crash, according to Mount Airy spokesman Doug Alexander.The call was relatively large for a vehicle collision because early reports indicated it was serious, Alexander said.When a call for multiple injured parties is placed, extra units respond to the scene while first responders triage and determine what equipment will be used and who will be transported for treatment, Alexander said. At least three ambulances were called for Monday's crash.
