Kansas City, KS : Woman in custody chase involving stolen pickup truck ended rollover crash on Tuesday June 7,2016.
A chase involving a stolen pickup truck ended with a rollover crash Tuesday afternoon and a woman in custody.
Summer Jean Nigh, 31, was booked into Johnson County jail Tuesday about 5:30 p.m. on suspicion of reckless fleeing from a law enforcement officer.
Police say the 2005 black Dodge Ram was stolen out of Independence. Kansas City, MO, police began following the suspect from the air. Then Kansas Highway Patrol took over from the ground.
The chase went from Independence to Kansas City, MO, then made its way to West 75th Street and Antioch Road in Overland Park, KS, before it ended on northbound Interstate 35 near 18th Street Expressway. A deputy in a highway patrol cruiser came up to the pickup truck and nudged it along the rear side using a "pit maneuver." This caused the truck to cross all lanes of traffic, flip onto the grass and come to rest on the ramp.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says it's a judgment call for troopers to end pursuits with tactical vehicle intervention.
"We do it when it's within our policy," said Lt. Ian Ingram, "and to bring the pursuit to an end would be the ultimate goal of such a procedure."
Troopers busted out windows with guns drawn and pulled a woman from the truck. Nigh suffered minor injuries, according to police, and was taken to the hospital. She was not wearing a seat belt.
