One person was killed and another was injured in a crash Wednesday after authorities were following the vehicle in a pursuit, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Deputies said they noticed a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of Hazelwood Drive and Burdell Road and initiated a traffic stop.
The suspects then took off and eventually crashed near the intersection of Leesburg Road and Old Leesburg road around 3:30 p.m., nearly six miles away from the initial attempted traffic stop.
"We were in the area burglaries were taking place, a suspicious vehicle came into that area we attempted to stop the vehicle to ascertain what was going on," said Lt. Curtis Wilson with the Richland County Sheriff's Department. "At that time the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed."
Lance Cpl. David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene and a passenger was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
A second passenger was not injured, Jones said.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT team is investigating the crash.
