Polk City, FL : Woman flees one crash and is killed in another on Interstate 4 in Polk County on Saturday, November 8, 2014
After hours of traffic delays, authorities reopened Interstate 4 in Polk City on Sunday.
The eastbound lanes were closed from about 7 p.m. Saturday until early Sunday morning because of a fatal crash involving five vehicles.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office says 54-year-old
Rita Bata Beaulieu, 54, of Celebration was driving a Jeep Wrangler westbound on I-4 near County Road 557. She was involved in a crash and allegedly drove away from the scene, authorities said.
Beaulieu then drove through the median into eastbound traffic, colliding with a Mercedes driven by 29-year-old Nawar Badeea Jaafar Blaibel of Tampa.
Blaibel had an adult passenger and three children in the car. Blaibel's passenger and the children were taken to a hospital, where they were treated and released.
The Wrangler spun across the road and overturned, tearing the vehicle apart. Although Beaulieu was wearing her seat belt, she was ejected from the Jeep and pronounced dead at the scene.
A pickup driven by 56-year-old Ricky Lyle Rice of Jacksonville hit the Jeep as it careened across I-4. Rice was entrapped. After firefighters extricated him from the wreck, he was flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
Toxicology tests will be done on Beaulieu, officials said.
