Salt Lake City, UT : Infant dies following Thursday night crash on Thursday, 22nd September 2016
The Utah Highway Patrol reports the child who was injured in a Thursday auto accident in Providence died Friday afternoon, and his mother has been removed from life support.
According to Lt. Lee Perry, 26-year-old Norma Barriga was driving a small passenger car northbound on State Road 165 in Providence, and she stopped at the traffic light to turn left onto 1700 South. Her 3-month old son was with her, buckled into a rear-facing infant car seat placed in the back seat of the vehicle.
When the light turned yellow, Barriga turned left into the path of an oncoming Dodge truck. Perry said the driver of the truck, 23-year-old Kaylee Hair of Millville, had accelerated just a moment before the light changed, and she braked hard when the car turned in front of her.
“She did everything in her power to swerve and avoid impact — that is probably what caused the truck to roll,” Perry said.
Hair, who is expecting a child, was also transported to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
A third vehicle that was waiting to turn onto SR 165 was struck in the collision, but no occupant of that vehicle was injured.
The mother and baby were both transported to Logan Regional Hospital. Perry said Barriga underwent surgery before she was transferred by air to a Salt Lake-area hospital. The baby was transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital.
Early Friday afternoon, the baby boy was pronounced dead, and Barriga was removed from life support.
One facet of the ongoing investigation will look at how the baby’s seat was secured.
“It may not have been properly installed,” Perry said.
The Bear River Health Department offers free car seat checks on the second and fourth Thursday of the month. Public Relations Director Jill Parker said a staff member can help parents select the right seat, make sure it is properly installed and that the baby is properly secured in the seat.
