A motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run collision near the junction of two major highways during the height of the Thursday evening commute, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported shortly after 5:50 p.m. at the connector between Highway 92 and U.S. 101 in San Mateo, Officer Moises Escoto said.
The motorcyclist, who officials identified only as a Hayward man, was traveling southbound on U.S. 101 toward the eastbound connector to Highway 92 when he was struck, Escoto said.
A witness saw a white SUV suddenly change lanes, striking the motorcycle and sending it into the side railing, he said. The rider was ejected from his Harley-Davidson Road King and fell to the ground below, a drop of 80 to 100 feet.
A witness saw the driver of the white SUV stop momentarily, step out of the vehicle, then get back in the vehicle and leave the scene.
Authorities are searching for a white SUV with damage to its right side. There was no information available on the make, model or license plate number of the car, or any description of the driver.
The connector is a major thoroughfare for commuters along the Peninsula as well as for people heading to the East Bay.
