Salt Lake City, UT : Driver injured after officer in unmarked car runs red light during pursuit in Salt Lake City Thursday morning, December 31, 2015
A driver is in the hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a Department of Public Safety agent that was pursuing a suspicious vehicle in Salt Lake City Thursday morning.
The suspicious vehicle sped through the intersection at 400 S. and 200 West and the agent, driving an unmarked Chrysler 200 police vehicle, went followed it through the red light and hit a Kia Soul, driven by an adult male, according to police.
The man was originally reported to be in critical condition, but is now listed in stable condition at Intermountain Medical Center. The agent was treated for non-serious injuries at the scene and was released, according to Major Brian Redd with the Utah Department of Public Safety.
The suspect that was being pursued fled and was not apprehended.
The DPS agent was working with the Metro Gang Unit, which is comprised of officers from several different agencies.
The incident began when officers had spotted the suspicious vehicle near 650 S. 150 West and attempted to stop it, according to investigators. Several gang-unit officers were in the area, but is not clear if any of the other officers witnessed the accident.
Major Redd said that the agent's vehicle was equipped with flashing red and blue lights, and a siren, all of which were activated during the pursuit. DPS has opened an internal investigation to see if the agent followed pursuit protocol.
"We're supposed to approach the intersection, slow to a safe speed, and clear the intersection prior to going into the intersection so we don't hit anybody," Major Redd said.
Salt Lake City Police have taken over the investigation of the accident.
