Scranton, PA : Man dies after interstate crash on Sunday, January 1, 2017
A Moscow man died Tuesday of injuries suffered in a crash on Interstate 81 over the weekend.
Mitchell Sauter, 21, died of blunt force head trauma at about 2:30 p.m. at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland said. The manner of death has been ruled accidental, he added.
The crash occurred at about noon Sunday near mile marker 183 on I-81, when Mr. Sauter, driving a station wagon, turned off the southbound lanes, crossed the drive reserved for police and emergency vehicles that connects the highways and drove into the path of a gasoline tanker heading north.
Mr. Sauter’s vehicle then collided with a guardrail and another car. The driver of the tanker was unharmed. The two people in the other car suffered minor and moderate injuries but were treated and released.
