Woodstock, VA : Child dies after three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 near Woodstock on Friday October 28th 2016
A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 near Woodstock on Friday afternoon caused the death of a 4-year-old girl.
Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler, of the Virginia State Police, said the crash occurred at 3:38 p.m. on southbound I-81, about three miles north of Woodstock. He said Greg Lee Peters, 41, of Madison Heights, was traveling in the left lane when traffic ahead of him slowed down. Driving a 2011 GMC pickup, Tyler said Peters struck a 2009 Honda Accord with three people inside.
The force of the impact pushed the Honda into a 2008 Subaru station wagon, Tyler said. Andrew Gordon, 45, of Denton, Pennsylvania, who was driving the Honda, was flown to Winchester Medical Center with injuries from the crash. His wife Leanne Gordon, 35, was taken by ground to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. Their 4-year-old daughter Olivia, who was riding in a child’s seat in the back of the car, died at the scene.
Tyler said there were no other injuries from the crash. Peters was charged with reckless driving and driving while suspended following an investigation by Trooper J. D. Rothwell with the help of the state police Crash Reconstruction Team.
The interstate was closed until the right lane opened at around 5 p.m., with all lanes opening at around 8:30 p.m. Area law enforcement said the crash also caused congestion on U.S. Route 11.
