A man was killed Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash near Artesia.

Ruben Diaz, 49, of Newman, Calif., was pronounced dead at the scene near mile marker 52 on U.S. Highway 285 south of Artesia, according to state police.

The accident happened at around 2:25 p.m., police said.

Police reported that their initial investigation revealed Diaz was northbound traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control and hit a guardrail.

State Police Spokesman Sgt. Chad Pierce said in an email that Diaz was not wearing a helmet.

The crash remains under investigation.
