Sparta, KY: 30-year-old Man Injured in drive race cars and died a week later at the hospital_14th September 2014
The Gallatin County Sheriff's Department has stepped in to look at the Sept. 14 incident that led to Steve Cox's death at the request of the Prosecutor's Office.
The 30-year-old was participating in the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, a driving school where people pay to ride in or drive race cars.
Cox was driving a car when he hit a concrete wall at Kentucky Speedway. He died a week later at the hospital.
There was no investigation into what happened, until now.
"The way this went down is a disservice to a great sport. Steven Cox is a NASCAR fan and that's why he got involved in that and that's why he took that opportunity," said Gary Leppla, an attorney for his family.
Leppla said the car was quickly removed from the scene and is now in Rhode Island. Investigators will have to travel there to examine it.
The Rusty Wallace Driving Experience said there is no video of Cox's last moments in the car because he didn't sign up for that option.
"Regardless of what the current information is, we believe there is video out there," Leppla said.
That's why Leppla is asking anyone who may have video or pictures, or witnessed the crash to come forward.
The company's president, Mark Ebert, released a statement saying, "We're cooperating fully with the investigation and doing all we can to understand what happened."
Leppla said -- above anything else -- that's what he hopes this inquiry will do for Cox's heartbroken family members.
"People talk about suits and litigation and we don't know what this will come to but you have a family that is devastated and they deserve answers and they have the right to answers," Leppla said.
The Rusty Wallace Driving Experience started four years ago. Since then, there have been a handful of accidents, but this was the first fatality.
Last year, a man sued the Rusty Wallace Driving Experience after he said his car crashed when the steering wheel came loose.
