GROVELAND, CA : German tourist dies of injuries after California car crash on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2016
Authorities say one of three German tourists whose rental car crashed over a steep embankment after leaving Yosemite National park has died.
The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday 57-year-old Maria Fissman died of her injuries Tuesday night at a hospital in Modesto, California.
The department says Fissman was traveling with 63-year-old Monika Schmidt and 16-year-old Reiki Regel. Both are in stable condition.
The Modesto Bee reports the women were part of a group of 10 people from Bersenbruk, Germany, who visited Yosemite on Monday. The trio was reported missing after they didn't show up in Groveland on Monday night.
Searchers found their rental SUV Tuesday afternoon down a steep embankment.
Schmidt was ejected from the vehicle, and Regel was able to get out of the car.
They were flown by helicopters to Modesto hospitals while rescuers worked to extract Fissman, who was trapped.
