Jonesport , ME : One man and woman killed in accident after They hit a guardrail and tree at a high rate of speed on early Saturday , January 3rd 2015

Two local people were killed instantly when the car they were driving veered off Main Street and hit a guardrail and tree at a high rate of speed early Saturday, state police said.

James Hatt, 26, was thrown while Bridget Robinson, 31, was partly ejected from the 1997 Cadillac as it flipped sideways after hitting the guardrail and sheared a tree in a resident’s front yard before coming to rest on its side. Neither were wearing seat belts. Both were from Jonesport, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

“We have no idea as to why they were speeding at that hour,” McCausland said Saturday.

The car was easily traveling at two to three times the 25-mph speed limit in that downtown area, he said.

State Trooper Jeff Taylor had seen the vehicle pull quickly into and out of a parking lot about a mile before the crash scene and, seeing its high rate of speed, begun to catch up to the car when the crash occurred, McCausland said.

“He was going to check out the vehicle,” McCausland said of Taylor. “We are not sure if they ever even saw the trooper. There was no pursuit involved. It didn’t get to that point.”

State police have not been able to determine who was driving the vehicle or who owns it. A team of five troopers investigated the scene on Main Street, which was closed for nearly six hours. They hope interviews with friends and relatives of the victims will answer some questions, McCausland said.
