New Orleans, LA : No charges expected in fatal pedestrian crash on Basin Street, NOPD says on Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

A 50-year-old man is dead after New Orleans police say he was hit by a car Wednesday night (Dec. 7) while crossing Basin Street at St. Peter Street. His name has not been released.

The driver of the vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Avalon, stayed at the scene after the crash and passed a toxicology test, New Orleans police said. He was released without being cited. NOPD said the investigation is ongoing but no charges are expected.

According to preliminary information from NOPD, the pedestrian was wearing all black clothing and was crossing Basin Street around 10:35 p.m. Wednesday. A witness, police said, said he was driving lakebound in the right lane when he saw the pedestrian at the last minute and avoided hitting him. However, the witness told police the driver of the Avalon was in the left lane and was not able to avoid the crash.

NOPD said the pedestrian was injured and died on the way to the hospital. No more information was immediately available. Authorities ask anyone with information about the crash to call the traffic fatality division at 504.658.6208.
