Sacramento, CA : Wrong-way driver causes collision on Tuesday, July 4, 2017

Two people were injured and arrested this week after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on the 118 Freeway near Kuehner Drive.

At 2:07 a.m. July 4, 25-yearold Graciela Sanchez of Pacoima was traveling west on the eastbound side of the freeway when her gray Chrysler 300 collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla driven by 32-year-old Daniel Reyes II, also from Pacoima, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Personnel from the CHP Moorpark area and Ventura County Fire Department responded to the scene. It took about 20 minutes to remove Reyes from his vehicle.

Reyes, whom authorities arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday.

Sanchez was taken to Simi Valley Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, after which she was booked at the Ventura County Pretrial Detention Facility on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and DUI causing injury, both felonies.

CHP officials said cases against both drivers will be sent to the Ventura

County district attorney’s office after the results of their blood alcohol content analyses are completed.

A driver was initially reported traveling on the wrong side of the freeway near Balboa Boulevard at 1:59 a.m. Tuesday. Personnel from the CHP West Valley area responded to 911 calls about the driver but were unable to get into position before the car traveled into Ventura County, where Moorpark area officers took over.

All eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about 20 minutes after the accident.

The fast lane was then opened to traffic, while the remaining lanes were closed until about 4 a.m., when authorities completed their on-scene investigation.
