COLUMBIA CITY, IN : Delphos woman dies in car crash in Ireland on Friday, September 15th 2017
A Fort Wayne, Indiana, television station reported Friday that a Delphos woman was one of two people who died while on vacation in Ireland as the result of a two-vehicle traffic accident earlier this week.
WANE-TV reported that Peggy Adams, 59, of Delphos, died Monday along a highway near the Irish city of Cork when a truck collided with the rental car in which she was a passenger. Also killed in the crash, according to an Associated Press account of the crash, was James Baker, 62, of Columbia City, Indiana.
Irish authorities are examining whether the American tourists may have been using a satellite navigational device which directed them to cross a busy road, according to The Irish Times.
The driver of the truck, a man in his 30s, was also taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital following the collision which happened at around 11 a.m. Monday. He was later discharged following treatment for shock, the Irish Times website reported.
The American couples had visited the Cliffs of Moher before they headed to Cork. They had been due to return to the U.S. on Friday. Prayers were offered for them at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Blarney on Tuesday, the Times reported.
Adams is the wife of Baker’s cousin. Both of the deceased were vacationing with their spouses when the accident occurred, according to the Associated Press.
WANE-TV’s website reported James Baker and Peggy Adams were killed instantly, and their spouses were injured. Baker’s wife, Deborah, suffered a collapsed lung and remains hospitalized. Adams’ husband, Jack, was reportedly treated and released.
The Post & Mail newspaper in Columbia City on Friday had no additional information surrounding the crash.
