Seminole County , FL : Toddler hit and killed by car after wandering from home along State Road 46 in Seminole County on Thursday mornin , January 15th 2015

Road 46 and Sand Pine Place Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

"The mother was still in the house. The child somehow got out of the residence and walked onto State Road 46 where he was struck," said Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday. The child was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital, where he died. He was identified as 21-month-old Christopher Johnson.

"They are interviewing the driver right now who is obviously distraught about striking a child," Montes said. "It's too early to tell, but, right now, we don't believe that driver could have done anything to avoid this crash."

James Stevens, 54, was driving east on State Road 46 when the boy appeared in front of his Ford Expedition, but it was too late to stop, said FHP.

"We know the speed limit out here is 50. That is a high speed and if you get impacted, if anybody gets impacted at that speed it is a very severe injury," Montes said. "Right now, we will just be reconstructing everything. We don't believe the driver saw the child until the last minute and was unable to avoid striking the child."

FHP said bystanders tried to perform CPR on the boy.
