Phoenix, AZ : 1 killed, 3 teens hospitalized after Phoenix DUI crash on Sunday, January 1st 2017
A man was killed early Sunday and three teens were taken to the hospital after a collision in Phoenix involving a 17-year-old driver who police believe was impaired and had stolen a vehicle, authorities said.
Shortly after 1 a.m., officers responded to a collision involving two vehicles near Seventh Street and San Juan Avenue, south of Bethany Home Road, said Phoenix police spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle responsible for the incident was driving at a high rate of speed with its headlights off before colliding with the other vehicle, Fortune said.
The driver of the other car, 61-year-old Dale Curtis, was extricated from his vehicle and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Fortune said.
In the teen's car were three girls, ages 13, 14 and 15, who sustained serious injuries but were expected to survive, Fortune said.
The teen attempted to leave the scene but was found by officers nearby, Fortune said. He showed signs of impairment during evaluation, and officers were advised that the vehicle was stolen.
The teen driver was arrested for investigation of manslaughter, theft of means of transportation, six counts of endangerment, driving under the influence and an outstanding felony warrant, according to Fortune. He was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility.
Fortune said the investigation was continuing Sunday.
