CAPE CORAL, FL : Drunken driver crashes into Cape garage on Sunday, December, 10th 2017
A drunken driver crashed into a home causing an early Sunday morning wake up in southeast Cape Coral.
Neighbors rushed out the door to find that a car crashed right into the garage of a home in the southeast Cape.
"I heard this tremendous big boom! I thought it was a dump truck coming up the street," Irene Bayous said.
"He must have come down there about 70 mph. There's no other way he could have done that kind of damage. He hit a full-size pickup and tore the front wheel off and then he went through a garage wall," said Bill Cronin, a witness who lives on El Dorado Parkway.
Police said Jeffery Simpson was behind the wheel. After swiping a pickup truck and running into the house, Simpson backed up and then got stuck spinning his tires in the landscaping of the cul-de-sac as he attempted to speed away.
"He wanted to get the heck out of there so fast it would make your head spin. He knew he was drunk," Cronin said.
When Simpson hit the garage, he knocked a heavy toolbox onto a classic car inside. In total, Police said he caused $75,000 worth of damage.
The homeowner was able to keep Simpson on the scene until police and EMS arrived. He was then taken to the hospital where investigators said his breathalyzer registered a .184 blood alcohol level; that's more than double the legal limit.
"If that pickup wasn't there he would have gone straight through the house," Cronin said. "It is unbelievable no one was killed."
