Columbus, AL : Charges filed in Interstate 185 wreck that left Fort Mitchell man dead on Friday, February 3, 2017
A collision on Interstate 185 late Friday has left a Fort Mitchell, Ala., man dead and a Columbus man charged in connection with the crash south of the Buena Vista Road exit, authorities said.
James C. Paige, 58, was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m. in the emergency room at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, said Muscogee County Chief Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley. His body will be transported to the crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
Daniel Anthony Dottle, 29, was taken into custody and charged with one count each of driving under the influence, driving too fast for conditions and driving in the improper lane. He is held in the Muscogee County Jail on bonds totaling $700 for a 2 p.m. Friday hearing in Recorder’s Court.
Paige sustained visible injuries after his southbound vehicle was struck in the rear but was able to step from his vehicle after the crash and talk to public safety personnel. “He got out of the car and started into cardiac arrest,” Worley said.
A 46-year-old male passenger in the pickup also was treated at the hospital. He was in stable condition.
Police said Paige had just passed the Buena Vista Road exit about 10:22 p.m. when his 2004 Ford F-150 pickup was struck from the rear by Dottle’s 2011 Nissan Altima. The impact pushed the pickup against the center concrete median.
A witness told police that Dottle’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before it spun around and bounced off the median. The Altima then struck the pickup truck traveling south in the center lane.
The crash remains under investigation by the Columbus Police Department.
