Brooklyn, NY : 41-year-old woman was killed by an expess MTA bus on Ocean Ave. between Ave. J and K in Midwood on Wednesday night, Nov 25, 2015
A 41-year-old mother of six stepped off of a curb in front of her Brooklyn home on Wednesday night to pick up her son from a baby sitter across the street and did not make it to the other side alive.
An MTA express bus slammed the woman, identified by family as Rukhsana Khan, as she crossed midblock on Ocean Ave. between Ave. J and K in Midwood at 5:51 p.m., police said.
The collision with the bus’s front left bumper left Khan lying lifeless on the street, witnesses said. Bystanders rushed to her aid, but nothing could be done, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at New York Community Hospital.
“She was a very dedicated lady and loving person,” said family friend Taj Akbar, 61, who was comforting the woman’s inconsolable husband, Fayaz Khan, 54, at the family’s apartment, in a building just yards from the crash site.
“She used to always care for the children and cared about their education,” Akbar said. “Suddenly she’s gone. This life is so unpredictable and uncertain.”
The driver of the BM1 bus, which was headed south on a route from Midtown to Mill Basin, remained on the scene, cops said.
Witnesses described the grim scene.
“The lady was in the middle of the street crossing,” said William Bizaldi, 64, who later discovered he had lived in the same building with the victim. “I heard like a boom and she looked like a plastic doll when she got hit.”
Albert Britton, 45, was onboard the bus at the time, and said the impact sounded like the bus “hitting a pothole.”
“The bus driver pulled to the side and got out. Then I heard people gasping,” Britton said. “That’s when I knew that somebody got hit.”
Police did not suspect any criminality but were investigating late Wednesday.
The death came just days after a 10-day NYPD crackdown on reckless drivers across the city.
The ramped up enforcement was part of Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities with increased enforcement and penalties as well as reduced speed limits.
