Paw Paw ,MI :72-year-old James Hastings killed after multi-vehicle crash on I-94 Thursday ,September 3rd 2015
Police have identified a driver who was killed Thursday in a multi-vehicle crash on I-94 as 72-year-old James Hastings.
Hastings, of Arlington Heights, Ill., died following a 2:15 p.m. crash in the eastbound lanes of the highway near the Paw Paw exit (Exit 60), according to Michigan State Police.
Meanwhile, Hastings' wife – Marsha Hastings -- whom family friends say was in the car with her husband at the time of the crash, was listed in critical condition Saturday afternoon at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, a hospital official said.
Police have said that a preliminary investigation has shown that the crash, which involved two semi-trucks and five vehicles, was caused by an inattentive semi-truck driver who failed to react to traffic that had slowed for construction on I-94. Police said the construction project, which was east of Exit 60, had shut down a lane of the highway and caused traffic to slow.
The semi-truck driver, a 49-year-old Wayland man who police have not named, ended up striking Hastings' Toyota SUV in its rear end. The semi and SUV then collided with four other vehicles and another semi-truck.
Police said four vehicle occupants were taken from the scene to local hospitals for treatment while seven others were treated at the scene.
Family friends said James Hastings was a dentist for many years in the Chicago area.
