Waco, TX : Two people dead in head-on crash near Bruceville-Eddy on Friday October 23 2016
A Belton man and woman died after a head-on collision Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in rural McLennan County, and a 41-year-old McGregor man was seriously injured, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. D.L. Wilson said.
At about 3:15 p.m., a 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were traveling east on Farm-to-Market Road 107 in a 2000 Chevy Tahoe, between Bruceville- Eddy and Moody, when the vehicle traveled into westbound traffic for an unknown reason.
Wilson said the speed limit is posted as 75 mph, and skid marks at the crash indicate the driver stepped on the brakes. But the vehicle’s brakes apparently locked, leading the Tahoe into the path of a 2012 Chevy pickup truck that was driven by the 41-year-old man, he said.
“It was a pretty massive impact,” Wilson said. “The two (Belton victims) were pronounced dead at the scene . . . and the subject driving the Chevy pickup is in very serious condition and was taken to Scott & White Medical Center in Temple.”
The driver from McGregor underwent emergency surgery after the crash, Wilson said.
Both vehicles appeared to be heavily damaged at the scene as crews worked to clear the roadway. Wilson said it was not clear what caused the Tahoe to cross into the westbound lane of traffic, but he said there was no immediate evidence of a tire blowout.
McLennan County Sheriff’s Office deputies blocked about eight miles of FM 107 from the city limits of Moody to Bruceville-Eddy as authorities collected evidence and witness statements. Wilson said crash investigators will return to the location to diagram the crash for more data.
The names of the victims were not available, pending notification of next of kin. Wilson said the crash remains under investigation.
