Hudson Oaks, TX : Walmart employee killed by suspected drunk driver on Monay, August 11, 2014
Police said a 16-year-old girl who they believe had been drinking hit and killed a woman in a Walmart parking lot Monday.
Just after 10 p.m. Monday, police in this Parker County community were called to the shopping center in the 2800 block of East Interstate 20, where a woman was lying unresponsive in the parking lot.
Hudson Oaks Police Chief Brandon G. Mayberry said the victim, 58-year-old Marla Z. Carroll, was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital for treatment.
Carroll died from her injuries Tuesday afternoon.
Carroll's longtime boyfriend, Dale Sewall, said he was heartbroken.
"I was raised not to hate, now I've gotta learn to forgive," said Sewall.
He said Carroll was walking into her overnight shift at the Walmart when she was hit near a front crosswalk.
He said when Carroll was taken to the hospital, her Walmart co-workers were hugely supportive.
"There was a room full of Walmart employees; two or three stayed overnight, and two didn't leave the entire time we were there," he said.
The family is now preparing for a service on Friday morning while trying to sort through cherished photos and other items that will honor the fun-loving woman's memory.
"I never thought I'd have to go through this so young," said Alisha Sewall, who considered Carroll to be her "mom."
The family said another man, thought to be 21 or 22, may have also been involved with the accident. He and the girl apparently left the scene before she returned to the parking lot a short time later.
Chief Mayberry said the 16-year-old girl was charged with accident involving injury or death, a third-degree felony. The police chief said alcohol "is suspected as a contributing factor in the accident," but toxicology results are pending.
No further information is being released due to the ongoing investigation, police said.
