A 4-year-boy was the victim in a fatal crash on Interstate 77 Tuesday evening, officials said Wednesday.
Sgt. C.F. Kane, with the West Virginia State Police Turnpike detachment, said the boy was a passenger in a vehicle that was being driven by his mother, 24. The family is from Kentucky.
Kane said the accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the Ghent area around mile marker 26.
The woman was driving a black, Chevrolet passenger vehicle southbound, when it “crossed the median, went across the northbound lanes and collided with a rock wall along the roadway,” Kane said.
The child was dead at the scene. Kane said his mother was transported to Raleigh General Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Kane said the crash remains an active investigation.
Troopers with the Turnpike and Beckley detachments responded to the accident, as did the West Virginia State Police crash reconstruction team.
The Ghent Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
