Sacramento, CA : Two men suffer major injuries after head-on crash on Wednesday, August 16, 2017
Two men suffered major injuries after their vehicles struck each other head-on Wednesday night in unincorporated Los Angeles County between Valencia and Green Valley.
The collision occurred at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday on San Francisquito Canyon Road, north of mile post-marker 8.9, the California Highway Patrol said. The location is between Valencia and Green Valley, said CHP spokesman Josh Greengard.
Carlos D. Ballardo, 28, of Lancaster, drove north on San Francisquito near the mile marker at approximately 80 mph as he approached a westerly blind curve, officials said.
Brian R. Zimmerman, 37, of Green Valley, was headed south on the same road near the same location at around 50 mph, authorities added.
Ballardo’s 2007 Chevy Cobalt “moved” his vehicle from the northbound lane to the southbound lane across double, solid yellow lines to pass slower traffic, the CHP said.
Witnesses said the Cobalt passed five or six vehicles at an “extremely high rate of speed” in a reckless manner in the southbound lane before hitting Zimmerman’s 2013 Hyundai Elantra.
Both men sustained major injuries that were not life-threatening, and they were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, Greengard said.
No arrests have been made. Investigators were looking into the reports of high speed, Greengard said. There was no initial information about any possible drug or alcohol use, Greengard added.
The CHP and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, and traffic on San Francisquito Canyon Road was reduced to one lane for about two hours during the investigation.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Newhall area CHP office at 661-294-5540.
