Houston, TX : Steven Gonzales, 24, died after a motorcycle crash on Sunday, May 28, 2017

A young off-duty deputy constable died late Sunday in a motorcycle crash near the I-610 East and Highway 225 intersection.
Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Steve Gonzales, 24 years old, lost control of his motorcycle as he tried to avoid another accident near the intersection, the precinct's office said. He collided with a concrete barrier and died, though he wore a motorcycle helmet.
Gonzales graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown and Houston Heights High School. He has worked for Precinct 1 since December 2015 and lived near the scene of the crash, according to that office.
"This is a stunning loss for law enforcement and the public. Dep. Gonzales set an example for other young people by dedicating his budding career to the protection of others," Constable Alan Rosen said in a statement. "He had a bright future and was known for his bright smile, and for those factors and many others he will be dearly missed."
Rosen said in a Facebook post that Gonzales "set an example for other young adults by devoting his budding career to the work of protecting others."
Gonzales was driven and loved working for the precinct, said Angie Diaz, his girlfriend of five years.
He'd bounced from job to job in landscaping and mechanics until he joined the agency and immediately loved being part of it, she said.
He aspired to join the narcotics division one day, she said, because he was interested by those cases.
Part of his love for law enforcement, she said, came from showing compassion to the city's residents. "'You have to have a heart,'" she recalled him saying.
"He wanted to enforce the law in the right way," said 25-year-old Diaz. "He was passionate about his job."
Gonzales would call Diaz during lunch breaks and talk about their days. Among friends and family, Diaz said, Gonzales "would be everybody's rock" but still had a goofy sense of humor.
His 25th birthday, she said, would have been Wednesday. Funeral services are pending.
