A teenager suffered life-threatening injuries and another person was injured Friday during a one-vehicle rollover crash near Wagner, officials say.
A 17-year-old from Lake Andes was injured as the passenger in the vehicle. Officials are not releasing the person's name because he or she is a juvenile. Benjamin Haynes, 39, of Lake Andes, was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS).
At about 4 p.m. Friday, a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by Haynes, was traveling southbound on Highway 50. Where the highway curves about 3 miles northwest of Wagner, Haynes continued straight onto the newly bladed gravel on 392nd Street.
The vehicle started to fishtail, entered the east ditch, came out of the ditch and rolled.
The 17-year-old was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Law enforcement reports did not say where he was transported, DPS said.
Haynes was wearing a seat belt and suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Wagner Hospital. Charges are pending against Haynes, DPS said.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol investigated the crash. The Charles Mix County Sheriff's Office and Wagner Police Department also responded.
