Phoenix, AZ : 2 deadly car accidents on 1 Phoenix road in an hour on Sunday, March 19th 2017
Police have identified a 17-year-old girl and a 22-year-old man who died in two separate, fatal collisions that occurred within 20 minutes of each other Sunday on the same Phoenix street.
Hailey Newton was killed when a vehicle plowed into the group she had been walking with near 43rd and Maryland avenues at 2:30 p.m., police said. Deron James was in a vehicle that was hit by a car and propelled into oncoming traffic, where his vehicle was struck head-on at about 2:50 p.m., police said.Sgt. Jonathan Howard, a Phoenix police spokesman, said that, in the first incident, a Toyota Camry headed northbound on 43rd Avenue ran up onto the sidewalk, striking a 24-year-old woman and four juveniles.
Hailey was killed. Meanwhile, a 7-year-old boy was critically injured and remained hospitalized Monday, Howard said. An 8-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl and the woman were taken to hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
After having struck the group, the Toyota Camry drove back into the roadway and was headed southbound in northbound lanes when it collided with an oncoming minivan containing eight people, Howard said. A 2-year-old was rushed to a hospital for significant but non-life-threatening injuries. Seven other people reported minor injuries or no injury.
Howard said the Toyota Camry continued on and collided with a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, the driver of which was not injured. Another driver, a 75-year-old woman, reported that debris from the accident struck her vehicle, but she was not injured.
The driver of the Camry, a 23-year-old man, remained hospitalized Monday with significant but non-life-threatening injuries, Howard said.
Police are still working to determine the cause of the collision.
