Good Samaritans pulled a Merrillville man from his burning vehicle early Thursday after he allegedly rear-ended a semi on Interstate 65, Indiana State Police said.

State troopers responded at 1:19 a.m. to a report of a car fire on northbound I-65 just south of the 61st Avenue exit. Police said a 2000 Kenworth pulling a tanker trailer was northbound on I-65 in the far right lane when a 2009 Chevrolet Impala rear-ended it.

The driver of the Impala, a 36-year-old Merrillville man, was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the collision. The impact caused the Impala to spin to the left, hit the inside concrete barrier and catch fire.

The 53-year-old Redkey, Ind. man driving the tanker trailer and two other good Samaritans pulled the Impala driver out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames, police said.

The Merrillville man was transported by Prompt Ambulance Service to The Methodist Hospitals' Northlake campus in Gary with severe injuries to his right hand.
