Winter Haven, FL : Two women injured after being flung from the bed of a pickup truck when it struck an oncoming car in Winter Haven on Tuesday, March 1, 2016
Two women were hospitalized Tuesday after being thrown from the bed of a pickup when it struck an oncoming car.
Injured were Alice Summer, 52, of 3025 Ernest Drive in Auburndale and Donna Ann McLemore, 35, of 3301 Maine Ave. in Lakeland, according to Winter Haven Police Department reports.
The women were riding in the back of a 1998 black Nissan pickup truck about 11:30 a.m. as the driver, Mateena Mosley, 43, of 414 Senate St., Apt. C, in Auburndale, was attempting to pull out of the Salvation Army parking lot at 320 Ave. T NW. Mosely's pickup truck was full of food, as the trio had just left the Salvation Army's food pantry.
Mosley was attempting to make a left turn out of the parking lot on the southside of Avenue T to head west.
A driver in the outside eastbound lane waved Mosley out, unaware of the 2007 tan Saturn approaching in the inside lane. As Mosley left the parking lot, Robert Smith, 80, of 1115 Lacosta Lane in Winter Haven, swerved his Saturn to avoid contact, but the two vehicles collided.
Summer and McLemore were thrown from the pickup's bed and landed on the roadway. Summer was taken to Winter Haven Hospital and McLemore was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. Both sustained only minor injuries.
Neither driver was injured.
Mosley was cited for failure to yield to right of way.
Avenue T was closed for about an hour as officers cleared the roadway.
