Three Knox County teens were struck by an ambulance on US 25E late Saturday night while riding their bikes, and one died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.
The accident happened in the west-bound lanes across from Sammie's Auction House just before 10:00 p.m. West Knox Fire Chief Daryl Baker said the Knox
County EMS ambulance was in the passing lane when the incident occurred.
The crew was en route to Baptist Health Corbin with a patient from the Barbourville area.
According to state police, the ambulance dropped off the roadway into the median, striking the teens, who were riding their bikes.
Although authorities have not officially released the identities of those involved in the crash, witnesses report that 15-year-old Samson Callender was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baker said emergency personnel had initially called for a helicopter to airlift the teen from the scene, but that request was late cancelled.
Two other teens, Keyshawn Blevins and Trenton Brock received minor injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin
Kentucky State Police investigated the crash and shut down one lane of the divided roadway while the investigation was conducted.
The last emergency crews left the scene about 5 a.m.
