A head on accident claimed the life of a Fortuna woman on New Year’s Eve. Two others involved suffered major injuries.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, the victim — who authorities identified Wednesday as Donna Jean Farfan — was heading west on Highway 20 on Sunday afternoon. Around 1:20 p.m., as the 57-year-old Farfan negotiated turns between Glenhaven and Clearlake Oaks, she reportedly drifted her car across double yellow lines.
Ronald Kern was driving east on Highway 20 at the time. Farfan’s car slammed head on into Kern’s SUV.
A report from CHP released on Tuesday said that Elk Grove residents Kern, 67, and his passenger Patricia Sholian, 63, had been transported to Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport with severe injuries.
Farfan was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP investigators say the Fortuna woman was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the accident. Both Kern and Sholian were wearing belts.
At this point it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.
