Charlotte, NC : Elderly man died after being involved in a west Charlotte crash Monday evening, Oct 26, 2015

An elderly man has died after being involved in a west Charlotte crash Monday evening.

The incident happened just before 5:45 p.m. at the intersection of Freedom Drive and Thriftwood Drive.

According to reports, 89-year-old Walter Porter Jr. was driving a Toyota SUV and tried to make a left hand turn from Thriftwood Drive onto Freedom Drive.

Leslie Bryant-Harris was reportedly driving a Chevrolet SUV on Freedom drive when Porter pulled out into the path of the Chevy. Police say Bryant-Harris tried to break but was unable to stop before hitting the Toyota, causing it to flip onto its side.

Porter was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries, but on Tuesday afternoon, he died from his injuries, according to police.

Bryant-Harris and three minors were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Everyone was wearing seat belts but one of the children in Bryant-Harris’ car was not in the appropriate child restraint seat, police say.

She has been charged with a child seat violation.

Speed was reportedly a factor in the crash.

This crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.
