Apopka, FL : Child struck, killed by pickup truck in Apopka on Monday morning, May 30, 2016

A one-year-old boy was accidentally run over and killed by his parent in Apopka Monday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators said it happened in the boy’s driveway off of Ulysses Drive and Thor Avenue in Apopka around 11:20 a.m.

Troopers are calling this a tragic accident and say it was the baby boy’s parent behind the wheel. Troopers said one of his parents got into a dark blue truck to reposition it on the driveway.

“Before the crash occurred the child was playing in the front yard when one of the parents exited the house and re-entered the driveway where they ran over the child," Steven Montiero of Florida Highway Patrol said. "The grandmother then exited the home and found the child in the front yard.”

“I heard screaming," Wilfredo Marin, a witness to part of the accident, said. "So I came running and I saw a baby behind a black truck. So they picked up the baby. The mother was screaming and praying to God to bring him back to life.”

The boy was declared dead at Apopka hospital Monday afternoon.

Traffic homicide investigators with Florida Highway Patrol said they are treating this as a traffic fatality.
Officials said distracted driving is a choice a driver makes and it will be determined if the driver will face criminal or traffic charges.
They added that they have no reason to suspect alcohol was involved, but as standard procedure a blood sample was drawn from the parent involved.
