Gonzales, LA : Floyd Cox, 66, killed in a wreck on Interstate 10 near Gonzales on Sunday, February 22, 2015
The investigation into a Sunday morning accident on Interstate 10 in Gonzales that caused the death of a 66-year-old Baton Rouge man has led to the arrest of another driver on a charge of reckless operation.
Floyd Cox, 66, who lived in the 8200 block of Greenwell Springs Road, was killed in the accident when his SUV was struck by another car, the impact of which sent his vehicle airborne, according a statement from the Gonzales Police Department.
The accident occurred around 5:15 a.m., on I-10 West, just past Louisiana 30.
John Sanchez, 27, of St. Amant, was booked on charges of reckless operation and driving with a suspended license after he allegedly told police he was speeding on his way to work at the time of the accident.
According to police, Cox was driving his 2004 Isuzu Rodeo westbound on the interstate when Sanchez struck it with his 2003 Acura RSX, a sedan. Upon impact, Cox's SUV "became airborne and landed in a grassy area on Boudreaux Road," which is next to the interstate.
Cox was wearing his seat belt but was pronounced dead.
After Sanchez was scanned for injuries at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, he was taken to the GPD station for questioning. There, he allegedly told police he was speeding.
A statement from the police department says further charges might be possible.
Because the crash caused the vehicles to land away from traveling lanes, interstate traffic was not impacted, GPD spokeswoman Charlotte Guedry said.
