Fort Dodge,IA : ATV crash follows rodeo parade on September, Monday 4th 2017

A woman was taken to Des Moines after she fell from an ATV just after the annual Dayton Labor Day Parade Monday.

Michelle Reed, of Fort Dodge, was transported to the UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge where she was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines due to the serious nature of her injuries, according to Dayton Police Chief Nick Dunbar.

Dunbar said he was following the four-wheeler and saw the accident. Two ATVs were westbound on Sixth Avenue Northwest exiting the parade route when one lost control and its rider was thrown onto the street.

Reed appeared to have hit her head, Dunbar said.

Dunbar and the passenger in his utility vehicle applied immediate first aid.

A witness said Reed had been reaching for her hat, which was coming loose, when the four-wheeler shifted and threw her off. She was not wearing a helmet, witnesses said.

The accident happened just after 11 a.m.

While Dayton Rescue ambulance crews responded, a helicopter from Des Moines landed in the baseball diamond just west of where the accident happened.

The Dayton Police Department is investigating the accident. The department was assisted by the Webster County Sheriff, Iowa State Patrol, Dayton Rescue Squad, Dayton Fire Department and Life Flight, Dunbar said.
