Desoto County , MS : Newly Engaged Couple killed in Crash after car hit a utility pole in desoto County on Tuesday night , February 17th 2015

A newly engaged couple died in a car crash in DeSoto County on Tuesday night. Despite the icy roads, deputies say the conditions did not play a role in the crash.

Investigators say the car hit a utility pole, throwing David Wyett, 36, and Christina Maher, 27, from the car. Both died as a result of their injuries.

The couple leaves behind six children. Maher had four kids between the ages of 10 months and 9 years old; Wyett had two kids of his own.

"It's like I lost my best friend, really," said Christina's sister, April Marohl. "David proposed to her and they were on the way to my house to show me the ring."

The couple never made it to April's house. Baby food, bottles, and diapers were found at the crash scene. No children were in the car.

"My parents, they work in the restaurant industry and they don't make a lot of money, and now they're left with four children to take care of," said Marohl, who, along with her family, set up a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for the children. "They have to buy everything from shoes to food to housing, everything."

Beer bottles were also found at the crash scene. Investigators are working to determine whether alcohol or speed were contributing factors in the crash. Despite days of icy rain and snow, investigators say the roads were clear.
