Gainesville,FL : Girl crashes SUV after driving from Trenton to Gainesville on August, Saturday 5th 2017

An 11-year-old girl drove a sport utility vehicle 20 or so miles from Trenton to Gainesville on State Road 26 Saturday afternoon before crashing into the back of a Jeep Wrangler.

The driver of the Jeep, Geoffrey Scully, 49, of Gainesville, was seriously injured in the accident, which occurred around 5:53 p.m. at Fort Clarke Boulevard, according to a Florida Highway Patrol media release.

The girl had minor injuries.

FHP Lt. Patrick Riordan said she stole her grandmother’s 2000 Ford Explorer. It was some time before the grandmother realized her ward — and the SUV — were missing. She called the authorities.

Meanwhile, Riordan said, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office was receiving reports from other motorists about an SUV traveling erratically east on SR 26.

The 2016 Wrangler was also traveling east on SR 26 and had stopped for a red light at Fort Clarke Boulevard when the SUV failed to stop and rear-ended the Jeep.

It’s “by the grace of God,” Riordan said, that the girl got from Gilchrist County to Gainesville without striking any other vehicles.

“There’s not a lot of places that she really had to stop coming across State Road 26,” he added. The girl is not particularly tall for her age and must have been using the tips of her feet to reach the accelerator and the brake pedal
