William J. Boettinger, 60, of Danielsville, Pa., was killed in the crash.
State police at Bloomsburg said Boettinger was driving west at Mile Marker 235.6 when he failed to notice traffic that had slowed for highway construction. His tractor trailer crashed into the rear of another rig, operated by Michael P. Catchings, 35, of Crystal Springs, Miss. Following the initial collision, Boettinger’s truck veered into the berm where it struck another truck, causing that rig, operated by William C. Wright, 29, of Downington, to overturn onto its passengber side.
The Catchings rig was pushed into the left travel lane where it collided with an SUV operated by Brittany A. Driscoll, 21, of Pittston, and a car operated by Michel Platini, 28, of Philadelphia.
An autopsy for Boettinger is scheduled for today in Allentown. Catchings, Driscoll and Platini were injured and taken to area hospitals. Wright escaped injury, police said.
The westbound lanes were closed for several hours yesterday afternoon and evening before the highway reopened Monday night.
