A Columbus man was killed late Thursday when the van he was driving struck the rear of a semi-trailer in Clark County.
Thomas Sweigard, 53, of Stewart Avenue, was approaching a construction zone in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Rt. 4 at milepost 47 about 10:40 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to the Springfield post of the State Highway Patrol.
He worked for a delivery company and was returning to his South Side home from a job in Indianapolis, said Dorothy Queen, 79, his mother.
“He was always there for everybody who needed him,” said Queen, who has three daughters and two surviving sons.
Sweigard had just changed lanes to pass slowed traffic when he rear-ended the truck, driven by Jerome Utterback, 42, of Davenport, Fla. Sweigard’s van was crushed under the truck, and he died at the scene.
Utterback and a passenger, Cheryl Utterback, 39, were treated at the scene.
Investigators said that witnesses reported Sweigard passing other cars and driving fast as the traffic slowed.
