Newport, IN : Motorcycle operator critically injured in a two-vehicle accident in Vermillion County on Wednesday, April 13, 2016

A Clinton man was critically injured today after authorities said he was thrown from his motorcycle in a two-vehicle accident in Vermillion County.

Steven R. Huffman, 62, was in critical condition at IU Health-Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, a hospital spokesman said.

Huffman had been airlifted to Methodist from Union Hospital in Clinton with severe head trauma, according to Indiana State Police.

State police and Vermillion County emergency agencies responded to the crash before 4 p.m. on Indiana 163, just west of Indiana 63, a news release stated.

Preliminary investigation determined Huffman's 1998 Yahama Enduro motorcycle was stopped eastbound on Indiana 163 at County Road 150 East, waiting to turn left onto northbound 150 East, police said.

The cycle was rear-ended by an eastbound red 1998 GMC Sonoma driven by Levi A. Gossett, 23, Clinton, according to police.

The impact threw Huffman, who was not wearing a helmet, onto the pavement, police said.

Bystanders and Gossett gave Huffman first aid until emergency crews arrived, according to police.

Authorities believe distracted driving by Gossett contributed to the crash.

Gossett was not injured and no citations were issued, police said.
