East Naples, FL : Three people injured in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 41 near Sugden Regional Park on Sunday, February 22, 2015
A driver left the scene of a crash that injured three people Sunday night on U.S. 41 in East Naples.
The hit-and-run crash occurred at 8:55 p.m. at U.S. 41 and Avalon Drive, near Sugden Regional Park, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.
A Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by William George Naylor, 34, of Naples, was eastbound in the outside left turn lane of U.S. 41 approaching Avalon Drive when the sport utility vehicle struck a Toyota Prius driven by Peggy Coomes, 66, of Madisonville, Kentucky, that was stopped in traffic facing east in the outside left turn lane, FHP reports.
Naylor fled the scene of the crash in another vehicle, and then fled on foot before being apprehended by deputies from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, FHP reports show.
Three people were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. A passenger in Naylor’s SUV, Antonio Garcia, 24, of Naples, was taken to NCH Hospital in downtown Naples. Coomes and a passenger in her car, Jimmy Coomes, 72, of Slaughters, Kentucky, were taken to Physicians Regional Medical Center. All occupants of the vehicles involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Naylor was not injured, but he was cited for careless driving, driving while license suspended/revoked, three counts of hit and run with injuries, two counts of hit and run with damage, and resisting arrest without violence, FHP reports.
