Westminster, MA : Wrong-way driver killed in a two-vehicle accident on Route 2 in Westminster on Tuesday night, January 20, 2015

An elderly woman driving a 2002 Suzuki Esteem the wrong way on the off-ramp at exit 27 on Route 2 westbound Tuesday night was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the state police.

State police troopers responded to calls of a car crash with a person entrapped in the vehicle on the off-ramp just before 7 p.m.

Exit 27 is at Narrows Depot Road in the town of Westminster, according to state police.

The initial investigation by the state police showed that the female driver of the Suzuki was traveling in the wrong direction when her car collided with a tractor-trailer.

The Suzuki became trapped under the 2001 International tractor-trailer, which state police said was being driven by Anthony Andon, 46, of Somerville.

Trooper Matthew Guarino declined to give information on what company Andon was driving for, saying that is part of the investigation. The back of the truck identified the company as New Penn, a regional transportation company.

He said it is unlikely any charges will be filed against Andon.

"There doesn't appear to be any wrongdoing," Guarino said. "He didn't hit her head-on. He swerved to try and miss her and hit the guardrail."

According to information from the State Police Media Relations Department, first-responders attempted to extricate the woman, who had no pulse, but were unable to free her from the vehicle immediately.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, and her identity was withheld Tuesday night pending notification of her next of kin.

Troopers from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, Crime Scene Services Section, Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Section, State Police Barracks in Athol and Leominster, and Troop C Patrol Supervisors assisted at the crash scene, as did officers from the state Department of Transportation.

As of 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, the exit 27 off-ramp was closed, according to state police. It was reopened about 10:30 p.m.

Route 2 west was open, but delays were expected.
