Roseville, CA : Two motorcyclists in McCourtney Road crash arrested on DUI charges on Sunday night, February 21, 2016
Two motorcyclists who reportedly were drunk caused a three-vehicle accident Sunday night, sending one of them to the hospital with major injuries.
At approximately 5 p.m., the two motorcyclists were traveling westbound on McCourtney Road approaching Lime Kiln Road at a high rate of speed, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Greg Tassone.
John Robert Oliver, 54, of Oroville, was the lead rider and Larry Leon Payne, 59, also of Oroville, was riding directly behind. They were approaching Sharon Renee Horner, 26, of Nevada City, who was driving a Toyota Corolla sedan in the opposite direction.
As they entered a curve in the road, the motorcycle riders failed to maintain their lane and crossed the center of the roadway into the eastbound lane, Tassone said. Oliver’s Harley Davidson collided into the driver’s side of the Toyota. Payne lost control of his Harley and went just behind the Toyota, where he overturned and slid off the roadway. Horner had applied her brakes and took evasive action during the collision; she skidded off the roadway, where her vehicle struck a dirt embankment and a large log approximately 100 feet away.
CHP and fire department/medical personnel responded to the scene. Oliver suffered a suspected severe broken leg and was transported by CHP helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Tassone said. Payne received minor injuries but refused transport via ambulance. Horner received minor injuries/cuts from flying vehicle glass, but also refused transport.
CHP officers determined both Oliver and Payne were riding their motorcycles under the influence of alcohol and were arrested at the scene, Tassone said. Oliver was released to medical personnel due to the extent of his injuries. Payne was taken by CHP personnel to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for medical clearance and was later booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on misdemeanor charges for driving under the influence of alcohol. Payne subsequently was released on $5,0000 bail.
