COLLETON COUNTY, SC : Man killed after SUV collides with tanker truck in Colleton County on Thursday , September 29th 2016

Emergency officials say a man was killed after an SUV collided with a tanker truck in Colleton County.

According to Colleton County Fire and Rescue, a man died from multiple traumatic injuries on Interstate 95 near the 41 mile marker southbound Thursday morning.

Colleton 911 operators began receiving reports of the accident at 9:22 a.m.

Callers told emergency officials that an SUV traveling southbound collided with a tanker truck, then crashed into several trees in the median.

"The entire left side of the vehicle was ripped from the chassis, ejecting the male driver who had been wearing a seatbelt," CCFR officials said."A female passenger was also in the car, but received minor injuries."

According to CCFR officials, five cats in the vehicle were also injured.

"Colleton Firefighter-Paramedics arrived minutes later to find the SUV in the median with heavy damage," a report states."An off-duty nurse had stopped to render aid to the injured."

Authorities say the male driver was found on the ground near the SUV with no signs of life.

"Crews attended to the woman and also treated the felines until Animal Control Officers arrived," authorities said."The truck driver was not injured and his tanker trailer was empty."

CCFR officials said one lane of I-95 was blocked due to the accident, causing traffic to back up for four miles.

"The Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and transported the male patient," CCFR officials said."Fire-Rescue Medic 13 transported the female passenger to Colleton Medical Center. The SCHP is investigating the crash."
